Autumn is one of my favorite seasons. Summer is over and fall routines have settled into place. There are no major holidays on the calendar, but there is plenty to appreciate, from abundant produce in the Farmers’ Market to spectacular tree-lined streets ablaze in red, yellow and orange. In some ways, October is the calm before the storm….of holiday expectations. As with so many things, when it comes to holiday stress and/or depression, the best cure is prevention. Once you are already stressed out, trying to regroup and recalibrate can be hard.

I don't know of anything that can bring a room of people together faster than a sing-along. In the past couple weeks here at Daystar Retirement Village we've had sing-alongs of favorite hymns, favorite folk songs and popular classics. It seems like we have a sing-along just about once a week, and sometimes two or three.

Did you see the news last month that when scientists gave “young blood” to old mice, the old mice were able to run on a treadmill longer and navigate mazes more quickly? According to the Washington Post, a trio of new studies has discovered that the blood of young mice appears to reverse some of the effects of aging when put into the circulatory systems of elderly mice.
