Summer Activities for Active Seniors to Enjoy

Posted by Daystar Retirement Village on May 2, 2022 8:00:00 AM

The sun will be out soon so time to find meaningful ways to enjoy it! The approach of the spring and summer seasons is a great invitation to venture out and try new things offered in the area. There are plenty of seasonal activities and events in every region. Our extra-long days and comfortable summer temperatures are perfect for outdoor activities that aren’t available during the cooler months. The limited time availability makes them special and fun.

Summer Activities for Active Seniors to Enjoy

At Daystar Independent Retirement Living in West Seattle, we look forward to our summer social calendar every year. There’s something about barbeques, lawn games, fireworks, and nature walks that bring out the playful and nostalgic side in all of us. We hope you’ll join us for the fun this year! We’ve compiled a guide to some of our favorite summer activities for seniors to help you start dreaming of your next sunny day adventure.

Picnic Games for Seniors

Picnic games are one of our favorite ways to keep people outside and engaged. We love setting out a variety of different picnic games so that everyone can mingle and choose their own level of engagement. There are several different variations of games for active seniors to play outside.  One of our favorite residents put it best, “Anything is a yard game if you play it in the yard.” Why not take your cards to a picnic table or play twenty questions under a tree? Here are some of our favorite picnic games for seniors:

  • Cornhole
  • Ladder Ball
  • Bocce ball
  • Croquet
  • Horseshoes
  • Oversized Board Games (Jenga, Checkers)
  • Shuffleboard

Summer Activities in Seattle

Seattle offers some world-class summertime entertainment and amenities.  We have spent time gathering information about the summer activities Seattle offers for active seniors to enjoy.  We’re happy to pass on our curated list. Our favorite local summer activities include:

  1. Chihuly Gardens- Gorgeous glass art installation near the Space Needle.
  2. Kubota Gardens- One of Seattle’s best and most beautiful parks, complete with waterfalls and breathtaking views.
  3. Pioneer Square-Art, shopping, history, museums, entertainment, and more, all in a scenic and storied neighborhood.
  4. University of Washington Botanic Gardens- This beautiful and seasonal landscape on U of W’s main campus is a huge crowd-pleaser.
  5. Check Out A Festival- Here is our favorite community resource for finding something fun for every interest and activity level in Seattle this summer.
  6. Woodland Park Zoo- Visit the zoo during daylight hours to take in the tigers and spend time in the butterfly house or come back after hours for an outdoor concert with Zootunes
  7. Olympic Sculpture Park- Take in these enormous works of art against a waterfront backdrop. A one-of-a-kind experience.
  8. Ferry Ride- Take a ride on an iconic Seattle ferry; feel the mist on your face!

We love Seattle in the summertime, but the spring isn’t too bad either. For many of us, it’s our first chance to get outside for more than a few minutes! Check out some of our favorite spring activities in Seattle.

What Can Active Seniors Do to Keep Busy Indoors?

Daystar Village is located in West Seattle, so we know a thing or two about rainy days, even in the summer. We like to think our rainy days invite us to treasure the sunny days all the more, while the grey days remind us that we don’t always have to wait for perfect weather to venture out. Here are some of our favorite boredom-busters for a day that forces you indoors:

  • Crosswords/Sudoku
  • Painting/Coloring
  • Textile crafts (crochet/knitting/felting/quilting/embroidery)
  • Online Games
  • Online Classes
  • Messaging or Writing Friends and Family
  • Indoor Exercise and Fitness Classes
  • Bingo
  • Museums and Galleries
  • Lectures
  • Movies
  • Card and board games

Looking for something else to do on a rainy day? Plan your day with ideas from our blog about indoor activities for solo seniors.
